Well, it’s friday and the last day of The Other F Word week. It’s been really fun for me to be digging out all this old music and getting back into it. Today is a nod to my hometown Minneapolis. So, I haven’t always been the biggest fan of NoFX, but this song is so great on so many levels. One, it’s talking about the Triple Rock, which is a great punk club here in Minneapolis, the video was filmed here, and features quite a few of the regulars from the Triple Rock. There’s a reference to Paddy and his tattoo. If you don’t know who Paddy is, he’s the bassist for Dillinger Four, and google his tattoo, and you will understand the one of the references. It’s now Day Four of The Other F Word week. Today, it’s Rancid, as Lars Frederiksen was featured in the movie, and had my favorite line of the movie: ”Sometimes you think about, ‘Oh Shit, should I have tattooed my forehead?… You know…” Another great line he had was “That’s how you clear out a park, you just bring a punk with his kid!” After everyone at the park cleared out when he showed up, it was quite funny actually. Rancid has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and I had already posted “Ruby Soho” when I first saw the trailer come out, so I really can’t post that song again, and so, I chose to post this song, which is another great one, and it was kind of hard to narrow it down, since they do have a lot of great songs, but this one is the one… enjoy!

Day three of The Other F word week. Today’s post is The Vandals, and I’m not really talking modern day Vandals, because they kind of suck. I’m talking the original line up of The Vandals, which entails the first EP and When in Rome Do as the Vandals do, when Stevo was the singer, not this Quackenbush guy… and Ackermann was the Guitarist. The Two founding members, along with Joe Escalante on drums… Those first two albums were great, and it all went down from there… it’s too bad, they really were a great band. Joe was featured in the movie, but they didn’t really play any music from them, so I am choosing one of my favorite songs from there, but it was hard, since they have so many great songs from those first two albums… but this is called Airstream, and it’s literally about their Airstream, their touring vehicle… enjoy!

Here is day two of The Other F Word week. Today is Black Flag, now this is Black Flag before Henry Rollins came in as the vocalist. Black Flag went through a lot of vocalists, they started with Keith Morris, who quit and formed The Circle Jerks, then there was Ron Reyes, who is the vocalist that they interviewed for the movie, and he quit midway through a gig, because the crowd was getting just too violent, and he was sick of it. Black Flag shows were notorious for their extreme violence, so, at one point, he couldn’t take it anymore and just left… Dez Cadena then replaced Ron for a short time, then came the infamous Henry Rollins. The band was super pissed at Ron for quitting the band mid-show, that when they credited him on the album after he left, they gave him the name “Chavo Pederast.” Here is the video for Revenge that was shot with Ron and was part of the movie “Decline of the Western Civilization.”

This past weekend, my wife and I watched a movie that we both wanted to see, but since it was an art house release, it was only a couple of nights, and we never made it out to see it, so we were excited when it showed up on Amazon Instant. That movie is The Other F Word. It’s about these guys, who are punks, playing in punk bands, singing about rebellion and resisting authority, and how they grew up doing all this punk stuff, and then, bam, having a kid. How do you be a parent, an authoritative figure, when you are singing about rejecting authority. It’s a fine line that they tread, and it’s really an interesting documentary about that struggle. It brought back so many memories of my growing up a punk, I knew so many of the songs and knew all about the bands featured. So, I decided to make this week all about music featured in the movie. So, today’s song was kind of a theme song for the movie, although Against Me! was not in the actual film, this song really describes what those guys were really about… It’s one of my favorite songs from Against Me… so enjoy!

I know this song is going to do nothing for my music credibility. It might actually take it down a few notches for most people, but this song has been haunting me the last couple of days. A terrible ear worm that I have been trying to purge the last couple of day, but nothing seems to work, so maybe by posting it and sharing it with you, the ear worm will finally slither away. I warn you, this is an incredibly catchy tune, and it could get stuck in your head for days, so you have been warned before listening to it… Enjoy?

I know that I posted the Wombats before, but they are such a great band, that I have to post more of their songs! This one is just so catchy and energetic, I really can’t help but chair dance when hearing it. When I saw The Wombats last year at the Varsity Theater, the place when nuts when the opening keyboard riff started. There’s really not much more I can say about this song other than to just listen to it!

I have been a long time Cars fan, all the way back to the late 70′s when I was a young pup. So, when Ric Ocasek put out his first solo album back in 1982, I was hoping that it wouldn’t mean the end of the Cars, which thankfully it wasn’t. And while I had high hopes for his solo work, it didn’t quite rise to the level of The Cars. There were a few gems on the first album, and this is definitely one of them. I actually think it would have been a great Cars song, if Ben Orr and Greg Hawkes had some input into the direction of the song, but this was Ric’s song… So, here it is… Something to Grab For…

This song is one of my all time favorites. It really embodies everything good in a mid-80′s alternative love song. A simply great melody, great hook with quirky lyrics. It’s just one of those great love songs, that isn’t a sappy love song. And it’s my choice for this Valentine’s day. So, this goes out to my wonderful wife, with whom I just celebrated 15 months of marriage with… “There’s nothing you and I won’t do, I’ll stop the world and melt with you!”  The future is open wide indeed…  :)

A few weeks ago, I posted about how I was attending a MN Food Bloggers event at Heidi’s, where they would be filming the new video for Brother Ali. Well, guess who got in the video! Oh yeah, this kid. Granted, I’m in there for maybe a half a second, two times, but still, I’m in the video! Woo Hoo! So, Brother Ali has released the Valentine’s Day EP today, and you can download it for FREE off the Rhymesayer’s website! So, the video that he released for the EP is called Shine On, and let’s see if you can tell who I am, my cameo’s are at 53 second mark, and the 56 second mark… Two other fun facts, my friend Aaron Courteau is the waiter in the video, and James Cromwell’s son produced the video and also makes a cameo, see if you can tell who he is.
