Warsaw : Ice Age

Before Joy Division became Joy Division, they were named Warsaw, taking their name from the David Bowie song, Warsazawa. They eventually did change their name, as there was a band named Warsaw Pakt, and they didn’t want to keep getting confused with them. They were much more on the punk end when they were known as Warsaw, their sound in the same vein as and playing with their punk compatriots, The Buzzcocks. They did end up re-recording some of the Warsaw songs, under the Joy Division name, this particular version comes from the post-humous album, Still. This song is really different than what they became, and what you normally think of Joy Division, but it is still one of my favorites from them. The original recordings of Warsaw are pretty readily available as an authorized bootleg. Seek them out if you are a completist and curious about the Warsaw sound. They really are interesting to see the progression of the band…
