Brain Failure : Coming to the USA

I discovered Brain Failure back in 2006, when I saw them open up for The Business at the Triple Rock Social Club. I had never heard of them before, and actually had planned to skip them, until a friend said that we HAD to see them. I asked why, and he said, because they’re from CHINA! I was like, whaaaaaa? Thinking that pretty much any kind of music not approved by the state was banned, and well, a punk band had to be banned by the state, but yet, here they were. They hail from Beijing, and actually had been around since 1997 at that point. At this point, I’m not sure if they are still around, as their both their US and Chinese official sites are no longer live. But when they hit the stage that night, I was immediately impressed, and bought the two CD’s that they had for sale. They were heavily influenced by Rancid and The Clash, mixing in some of the ska sound into the Oi punk sound. They sing in both Chinese and English. They really won me over that night. American Dreamer is the last album available in the states, they released an EP and another full length since that album, but they are only available in China. I really wish I could get my hands on them, but something tells me I’m out of luck. Just goes to show you that punk is alive in some of the craziest places that you wouldn’t expect it…
