Hooverphonic : This Strange Effect

Day two of electronica week. This song comes from Belgian band, Hooverphonic. You might be familiar with this song, as it was used in a Motorola commercial, promoting the SLVR phone. This song is actually a cover of a Dave Berry song, that was written for him by Ray Davies of The Kinks. It was a small hit for Dave, hitting no. 37 on the UK singles chart. The Kinks never did record a version for themselves, although, there are live recordings that do exist of this song. When I first heard this song, I had no idea that it was a cover, it wasn’t until I read the liner notes that I discovered that it was written by Ray. Hooverphonic enjoyed a lot of success early on with their releases A New Sound Spectacular and Blue Wonder Powder Milk, but as their sound changed, so did their popularity. This song is still an amazing cover, and I still love to bring this album out.
