Liz Phair with Material Issue : The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) (The Banana Splits Theme Song)

Saturday Morning week continues with the theme song from The Banana Splits. This saturday morning variety show, which combined both live action and animation was the brain child of Hanna Barbera, who brought you Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and The Smurfs just to name a few. Hanna and Barbera brought in the Sid and Marty Krofft to do the costumes of The Banana Splits themselves. This was their first major foray into the Saturday Morning line-up, but would later bring you, The Bugaloo’s, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and Land of the Lost. I only saw The Banana Splits a few times, as it was officially off the air before I was born, but I did see episodes in syndication. It wasn’t a huge favorite of mine, but this song is a brilliant cover, and captures not only the fun of Saturday Mornings and captures the musical styles of the ’60s in which the show was born, but also makes it contemporary for today’s time. Both Liz Phair and Material Issue were big mid ’90s Power Pop artists, and the perfect combination to bring this song to life…
