The Wallets : Totally Nude

Today’s post comes with sadness in my heart. Late last night, I found out that Steve Kramer of The Wallets passed away while at the Sundance Festival. Steve was the founder of the Wallets, who were a quirky, art band that combined new wave, with jazz, and a little bit of polka, as Steve often played the accordion on stage. They released 3 albums on the infamous Twin Tone label, with one being a greatest hits compilation. The band broke up after a long touring schedule in an old converted ambulance, and tensions within the band just couldn’t be overcome. Steve went on to start an advertising agency, with The Wallet’s producer Bob Hest, writing music for commercials, that included clients like Target, MTV, Time Warner and Buick… Locally, his most famous jingle, was “Eric, the bike man!” which is Steve voice. Although, the Wallets never saw any commercial success, they did have one famous fan in David Byrne, who actually sat in with them one time at a 7th St. Entry show. They were an important part of the Minnesota music scene in the 80’s, and he will be missed greatly. Rest in Peace Steve…
